BY-NC-SA It's nothing I couldn't have told you after a night out. Go to any given party or bar, and without fail, for every cute guy, you have 10 cute girls. Competition is fierce for women looking to get the attention of a cute or even just interesting guy, and a new study argues there's an evolutionary reason for that. The findings, released by the University of Helsinki, found the following:
In a study released last week, Markus Jokela, a researcher at the University of Helsinki, found beautiful women had up to 16% more children than their plainer counterparts. He used data gathered in America, in which 1,244 women and 997 men were followed through four decades of life. Their attractiveness was assessed from photographs taken during the study, which also collected data on the number of children they had.
Those beautiful women were 26% less likely to have sons. Behold the new race of hot women who will one day take over the world.
Over generations, the scientists argue, this has led to women becoming steadily more aesthetically pleasing, a “beauty race” that is still on. The findings have emerged from a series of studies of physical attractiveness and its links to reproductive success in humans.
When scientists start to try to explain why this might be, it gets into some sticky territory. This study seems to prove that evolution can adapt to patriarchy and centuries of women depending on their looks to get guys. Evolutionarily, the richer or more successful a man, the more likely he is to have children. We've had to get hotter to have a better chance with the successful guys, and men in turn try to make enough money to take their pick. Sounds like a crappy evolutionary deal on both ends to me. I think I'm going to have to say screw you Darwin on this one.
