Bay Area Rapid Transit officials have agreed to pay $1.5 million to the daughter of Oscar Grant III. Grant was shot and killed by former BART officer Johannes Mehserle on New Year’s Day 2009. 5-year-old Tatiana will receive payouts until her 30th birthday. The San Francisco Chronicle quoted attorney John Burris, who filed the suit against BART on behalf of the family: "I think it's a good situation for the child. She will be well taken care of over her life," Burris said. "We can't bring the dad back, but the dad is taking care of her nonetheless."
The San Francisco Chronicle also pointed out
“The deal, which had been pre-approved by BART's Board of Directors, closes part of a federal civil rights lawsuit brought by Grant's family that initially sought $50 million. Co-plaintiff Wanda Johnson, Grant's mother, did not settle.
Former office Mehserle is currently facing murder charges. His trial was moved to the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, a venue known for big trails. This is the same courthouse where O.J Simpson was acquitted in 1995 of murdering his ex-wife and her friend, and where Phil Spector was convicted of the 2003 murder of an actress.
