The Princess and the Frog Disney’s latest animated film hits the theatres on next Friday. There have been many discussions about princess Tiana, being African American and the prince being Brazilian. Typically Disney’s story tale princesses are white unless the story is based on history. Mulan is about a Chinese woman warrior. Pocahontas is about a woman a part of the discovery of America. Tiana is an addition to Disney’s 70 year history of princess story tales. She can bring confidence to every girl of every race, especially young black women; they will be able to see themselves in a pretty and positive image.

One thing that was controversial is the love interest being a Brazilian prince. Some believe it is a bad idea to have an interracial relationship because it makes it seem that black boys aren’t good enough to be princes. This movie should not only improve young girl’s confidence in their own self image but boys too. Others think that having a Brazilian prince in The Princess and the Frog is a good idea because it teaches children that race doesn’t matter and that interracial relationships are accepted! They say it shows love can not be restricted within someone’s race. I feel the prince should be black because in every other Disney princess animations the prince is the same race as the princess, but I think that a Brazilian prince is perfectly fine. Interracial relationships are a good thing and children should know that love can’t be defined by racial background.
