The Search: Bob Marley's Birthday.
Bob Marley, born February 6, 1945, is recognized as one of the most admired performers of reggae music. He died in May 11, 1981. On February 6 fans around the world celebrate Bob Marley’s birthday.
In the awakening of America’s first black president, the memory and accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr. have often been brought to our attention. I’ve heard that Martin’s dreams came true on January 20, 2009. This may be true, but throughout this historic time, and during my experiences at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, I have been reminded of the spirit and love of Bob Marley. Because the millions of people who were there exhibited the peace and love that Marley talked about in his music.
Although commonly recognized as an amazing musical performer (which he was) Bob Marley is in my opinion one of the figures who contributed the most to the fight for equality, social consciousness and human rights; being the right to live in peace Bob’s highest aspiration.
It was because of Bob’s ability to move people through his words and melodies that he was seen as a danger to the political structure in his time. He lived at a unique moment in time, when the world had many other rising young leaders who were speaking out against the unjust social structures that left many living in poverty and politically powerless. Leaders such as Ernesto “Che” Guevara, Malcom X and John F. Kennedy littered the world’s landscape, speaking as representatives for the people and not just political parties. Like now, that was a monumental time of change. In the 60’s, many of these leaders were assassinated and although Bob Marley officially died of cancer, an assassination attempt was made on his life on December 3, 1976.
But like Martin, Malcom, JFK and Che, Marley is far from forgotten. Throughout the world his memory is honored through concerts such as the Ragga Muffins Festival, and also through the culture of Rastafari. If indeed the world is changing, let’s not forget that it’s not just because of Barack Obama, but also because of many people who came before him, people like Bob Marley.
Happy Birthday Rasta!
