Tuesday night the air was full of sweet smells at MOAD in San Francisco. Scents of vegan BBQ tempeh cubes and essential oils worn by the sold out crowd reflected what the night was all about- Bryant Terry’s Vegan Soul Kitchen book launch. Terry’s mission to get us eatin’ right and livin’ right is made easy by his countless pages of strictly vegetarian recipes paired with suggested “soundtracks” from artists who complement the flavor of the particular dish. I mean really, what goes better with Citrus Zest and Fresh Mint Tea than “So Fresh and So Clean” by Outkast?
Live music from emerging soul singer Renee’ Wilson, a Bay Area transplant originally from New Orleans was a highlight of the night. Wilson’s style is free and sassy with roots in classic jazz-she’s reminiscent of singer Adriana Evans who had R and B hits back in 90’s. She’s also known for her acting role in which she played Raylette Pat Lyle in the acclaimed Academy Award winning film Ray, starring Jamie Foxx. Backing her up was the talented Kev Choice on keys.
If you don’t already know Kev Choice you better google him before he blows up big! Known as a pianist, composer, and band director who has toured with artists like Lauryn Hill, he has most recently emerged as an outstanding, crazy talented lyricist from Oakland. Who knew this brotha with a scholarly classical and jazz background had so much fire inside? You can say he is the Nas of the Bay Area.
