Youth Radio's Downtown Digital Media Center
Capital Campaign

Youth Radio has purchased a 20,000 square foot building in the heart of downtown Oakland, California, at 1701 Broadway. In this new facility Youth Radio will leverage its existing resources and develop cutting edge programs to serve the increasing needs of young people and their communities.

Our free after-school trainings provide the critical support young people require to develop into productive citizens. By expanding into this historic bank building Youth Radio will be able to bring ever more comprehensive services to youth, including:

Pathways to Higher Education and Careers, a program in partnership with San Francisco State University, Peralta Community Colleges and UC Berkeley that will offer one-on-one college bound services, career counseling, and college credit for media trainings completed onsite;
• a Technical Institute to prepare youth for media industry-specific jobs, as well as to enhance Oakland’s economic development. Youth Radio’s new studio complex for professional film, radio, music, web, and video production will give students a real-life training ground for engineering and studio management;
• a Journalism Academy training the next generation of journalists to operate with the highest integrity; and
• a Mind-Body-Health Center offering workshops in nutrition, conflict-resolution, martial arts, and counseling, and teaching young people to become public health advocates.

As Youth Radio’s national presence grows, with news bureaus in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C. and production of 300 broadcasts per year, our central office must remain a forerunner in the field of youth media with state-of-the art digital studios to maintain our highest media production standards. These new facilities (including an on-air studio located on the ground floor, visible to the passing community) will be built with the expertise of media professionals from organizations such as Skywalker Sound and Pixar Animation, who will work side-by-side with our young engineers in the construction phase.
