Classes and Training

Youth Radio is currently accepting applications for our next session! If you live in the Bay Area, are between the ages of 14 and 17, and wish to join our on-site class, download the application. The classes are free!

Since 1992, Youth Radio has served thousands of teenagers by providing free, after-school training programs in broadcast journalism, radio/web production, engineering and media advocacy and literacy. Using on air DJ opportunities as a “hook,” our organization provides stable, long-term guidance for youth as they transition from middle to high school, from high school to college, and into meaningful career paths.

Youth Radio works with approximately 1,300 youth each year through local trainings, statewide media advocacy programs, and through our national network. Youth Radio programs are open to youth ages 14 to 18, with advanced programs open to young adults up to 24 years of age. We focus our outreach efforts on underserved youth populations. Our target population is high-school youth with an emphasis on girls (55%), low-income youth (80%) and young people of color (80%).

Youth Radio trains young people in broadcast journalism, radio and web production, engineering, and media literacy. Training programs are conducted quarterly, and include:

  • CORE
Introductory media training program: In this 10 week program students develop basic journalism and broadcast skills, including news and commentary writing, on-air announcing, music programming, web and video production

  • BRIDGE
Intermediate media training program: In the second phase of training students spend ten weeks specializing in an aspect of media (news, radio broadcasting, music, web or video) they find most compelling

  • CAP (Community Action Project)
Intensive leadership, education and media training design for Oakland youth at-risk of dropping out of high school. Supported through the City of Oakland’s Measure Y Violence Prevention and Safety Funds.

  • Emerging Media Professionals
Advanced training for young people ages 18-24: A six-month advanced course in public speaking, group facilitation, community networking, journalism and media production and distribution.

  • Internships
Opportunities for successful graduates of CORE and BRIDGE to work as peer teachers, content producers and production staff at Youth Radio

  • Externships
Job shadowing and mentorship opportunities at media, communications technology or social justice organizations

  • Media Education, Production Programs & Technical Assistance
For local youth, institutions and community groups, we offer media workshops, technical assistance and production services
