Shakira Then and Now

"She talks about how long it can take to forget about someone who hurt you."

By Lizbeth Ayala

Listen to this Commentary!

Lizbeth, a senior at Roosevelt High School, feels like female music artists change their style in clothes, their "look", and even the themes of their songs as they become more popular. Lizbeth says one of her favorite musical artists, Shakira, is a good example. Shakira has dyed her hair, wears sexier clothes, and sings more in English now that she is hitting the top of the charts in the U.S. "It feels like [she] forgot about the audience connection", Lizbeth says.

When I first listen to Shakira music I was in middle school. I thought that her music got a really good beat.I remember listening to her music before she was famous in the Unite States. The first song I ever listen from shakira was “estoy aqui”.

Every time I listen to this song I think about an experience have been through. Many parts of the song remind me of what I have been through and how it felt like. There is one part of the song that I felt really describe what I went through at that time. Like when she said “estoy aqui queriendote, ahogandome entre fotos y cuadernos, enter cosas y recuerdos.

Reflecting back on this song, I think about what shakira is trying to say to me as her audience. As her audience I think that she is trying to say that I’m not the only one who feels this way. She talks about how long it can take to forget about someone who hurt you. It might take years to move on. Even though you’ve moved on with your life, you still care about that person. When you really move on, is when you can forgive them. I felt that that was her message to me as her audience.

Now in the year 2007 Shakira is a well known artist all over the world. She is mostly known for that sexy dance that she does in her music videos. What shocks me the most is that her style has change. She has gone from be the girl next door. To a very sexy hot blonde. Before she became the knock out that she is today she had a different style. She started off with a plain and simple look and style. Basically she looked very natural. Her style was a style that any girl would feel comfortable wearing. It was a style where you felt no pressure to change your styles to the extreme. Now when you see Shakira you see her in this whole different style. You don’t see her with her black straight hair any more. Mostly you see her with her blonde curly hair. And with very sexy cloth she has taken a very dramatic change. But her look and style isn’t the only thing that has change. Her music has taken a twisted turn. Her music is still good and has a really good beat but that is all. Before she became super famous her music was more easier connect to with. Now it has become harder to relate to her music.

Shakira is one of the female artists who’s gone through changes as they become popular. I think that they are pressured to change in order to sell their, music. If they want to make it into the music business, they have to change their image, their music. When they do that, they kind of lose what they wanted to do in the first place with their music. Mainly I think that their manger’s play a big role in their dramatic change. Either way many of this female artist gain new fans but lose old hard core fans. Do to their change in image and their style of music. So I leave you with her latest single “beautiful liar” where she guest started with Beyonce. The song that made me realized that it’s finally over.
