Reading Trash

By Ankitha Bharadwaj

Listen to this Commentary!

Recently, a Borders bookstore opened near my apartment. Soon after, I decided I’d spend my last summer before college plopped on their couches reading Jane Austen and Charles Dickens novels. But that’s not what happened.

I’m Ankitha Bharadwaj with a commentary from Youth Radio.

From taboo vampire love stories to the exploits of New York’s young and reckless…I can’t wean myself away from these trashy teen novels! They’re like candy for my brain; I don’t have to really think while reading these books. And who wants to spend their summer “thinking”??

That’s what college is for! My worst nightmare is being clueless in my English Lit 101 class when someone breaks out an Oscar Wilde reference, leaving me looking like an absolute idiot.

So I’ve resolved to read one classic novel for every two trashy books. And so far, so good! I managed to squeeze in Crime and Punishment, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dante’s Inferno and a few other scholarly books. But of course, I’m still hoping to round out the summer with a little teen trash.

For Youth Radio, I’m Ankitha Bharadwaj.
