A lot of teens find it difficult to wait patiently for their time to start driving, but Youth Radio's Ankitha Bharadwaj isn't worried about it. She explains why dirving is the last thing on her mind. (February 11 on KCBS)
In a lot of ways, I’m your typical teenager. But unlike the average teen, driving has no appeal to me. In fact, it’s the farthest thing from my mind.
Teens look forward to driving because for the first time, it puts complete independence within their reach. For me, driving isn’t all that important. I already have all the independence I need right now. In fact, having a car can be a major hassle. When I see how early my friends come to school just to find a parking space, I can’t help but feel pity for them.
There are, of course, other issues that stop me from even considering getting a car…like car insurance, the price of gas, and the fact that I’d be polluting the air. But it goes beyond just those concerns too. With my single working mom bringing home just enough bacon to get by and college right around the corner, a car is definitely not on my shopping list.
If you’re wondering how I’m gonna get around, don’t worry. I found out about that little secret called public transportation years ago...and plan to continue being a regular rider.
