Teen Pregnancy

Listen to this Commentary!

Stephanie Martija

Last year, my cousin became a father. He was only eighteen years old.

I'm Stephanie Martija with a commentary from Youth Radio.

We were in his bedroom playing video games, when he told me his girlfriend was pregnant. He made me promise not to tell anyone, even though the baby was due in less than two months.

At the time, my cousin was in high school and working part-time at a clothing store. But soon, he would need to deal with parenting, and making enough money to support himself and his new family. He was ready to carry the weight, but all the responsibilities were draining his youth away.

It seems like just yesterday my cousin and I were talking about mid-terms and high school dances. Seeing my cousin transform from a care free guy to a father figure truly opened my eyes to the real deal.

I respect my cousin for being responsible, but I couldn't even imagine myself changing diapers, waking up at the crack of dawn to a shout of cry's and giving up a lot of my teen life.

For Youth Radio, I'm Stephanie Martija.
