Visiting Ethiopia

"Even though I have happy memories of being in Ethiopia, going back to visit might be hard."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Kalid Mohammed

Sometimes I wonder how it would be to visit my home country of Ethiopia.

Assela is the city where I was born, but I don’t really know what it looks like anymore. The last time I was there I was only 8 years old and I imagine things might be different now that I’m 15. I remember the streets weren’t paved, and it was dusty, so when the wind blew from time to time, it would stick in our clothes and hair. I remember coming home around 9 or 10 at night because it didn’t get dark until very late and it was safe to be outside.

Even though I have happy memories of being in Ethiopia, going back to visit might be hard. In Ethiopia people see you as different when you come back from America. They want to see something from you that impresses them, like money, or a good job, or an excellent education. That’s a lot of pressure and I worry that I won’t be the person they want me to be.
