Plastics Make it Happen

Cesar doesn't know what he would do without his credit cards

By Cesar Z.

Have you ever heard the commercial that says, "Plastics make it happen?" Well, plastics do make it happen. For me, today, they made lunch happen.

I ran out of cash and forgot to go to the bank. I thought I would go later. Lunchtime came along and I didn't have cash… what did I do? I paid a $3.49 bill with my plastic — otherwise referred to as a credit card.

I do not know what I would do without my credit cards. I can go anywhere and get anything without having to worry about having cash. And the best part of it is that I can pay for it later.

I'm a big spender. I am one of the teenagers that contribute to the $130 billion spending statistic reported by Teen Magazine. I buy whatever I want. Then later, I regret it because I have to save for the next thing I want. That's when I really force myself not to use my plastic.

Credit cards definitely contribute to my spending. But then again, my poor judgment on saving for the future also contributes. I sometimes wish I would have learned to save my money while I was in high school. Now that I am in college and around people in the entertainment industry with more plastics than me, it is very hard to save my credit cards from being used. Peer pressure sometimes comes along and says buy those very expensive shoes that you will only wear once even though you don't really like them because they are in style.

In a way I am glad that I have credit cards because unlike my friends, I have a good credit report. I can go buy a car and rent an apartment without needing anyone else. Before exchanging goods, business who sell cars or rent apartments look at your credit history, and that could only be obtained if you have a credit card.

I guess credit cards are not bad, but I do have to work on not using them too often.
