Equality in the Workplace

"I think many companies tend to hire women candidates solely to shift the ratio of men and women."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Sarah Beth McKay

I’ve been hearing statistics comparing the accomplishments and earnings of men and women since before I could understand what they meant. It started with my mother’s pro-feminist books- titles like How to Mother a Successful Daughter and Growing Strong Girls.

I attended an all girls’ middle school where my classmates and I were constantly reminded our goal was to reverse gender inequality at work. I couldn’t help wondering – is this an appropriate goal for females to follow?

Let me explain my thoughts. Feminist groups have been pressuring companies and the government to equalize their offices and hire a more balanced number of men and women. As a result, I think many companies tend to hire women candidates solely to shift the ratio of men and women. This is no different than hiring a man just because of his gender.

My parents and teachers have taught me to be a strong young woman, but they have also taught me that an equal amount of work and a good education are the keys to success. When I start my own career, I expect to have to work just as hard as the next man or woman and to be treated the same.
