Living the "Straightedge"

"At its most simplistic principles, straightedge is an anti-dependency lifestyle."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Cameron Tracy

Youth Radio’s Cameron Tracy explains the lifestyle of “straightedge,” a movement that requires you to have respect and compassion for humanity.

When you think of youth, you probably see images of irresponsible little punks defacing property, drinking, and partying. However, many young people choose to live a different kind of life.

For those unfamiliar with the term, straightedge is a lifestyle that’s been adopted by youth all over the nation. It has its origins in the late 90’s Chicago hardcore music movement. I was surprised to find that many of the ideals were things I agreed with.

At its most simplistic principles, straightedge is an anti-dependency lifestyle. I shared many of these ideals even before learning about straightedge. It doesn’t require you to be a specific ethnicity or religion. All it requires is for you to have respect and compassion for humanity.

If young people are exposed to this today, imagine what they will do in the future and the immeasurable benefits this philosophy could bring to the world. This philosophy has enormous potential and I for one can’t wait to see where it will lead.
