I Think 16-year-olds Should Vote

"A teenage vote could bring a new voice to the table."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Robert Reynolds

Sixteen-year-olds should be allowed to vote.

If 16 year-olds are mature enough to be tried as adults in courtrooms, mature enough to drive a car, mature enough to pay millions of dollars in sales taxes each year, then 16 year-olds are mature enough to vote.

Some critics argue that 16-year-olds will just vote the way their parents do. But plenty of adults I know vote the way their parents did, and it’s not a problem for them. Why should teens be held to a stricter standard than adults?

Besides, no one can make decisions about issues that affect 16-year-olds as well as we can. We’re the ones in classrooms, so we would be the most informed voters on measures pertaining to education. If 16 year olds were allowed to vote, I’m sure that more money would be spent on jobs and education instead of war and occupation.

At least a teenage vote could bring a new voice to the table. Before you think I’m crazy, just think about this. I’m just standing up for democracy.
