Voices From the Middle East:
Liat Margalit

"It might be too naive to say that, but I can see us returning to life as it were before the Intifada began."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Liat Margalit

Hi my name is Liat Margalit, I live in Jerusalem, Israel. Since the war began, I can say that there was a little bit tense at first, but then after we saw what’s going on in Iraq I think people didn’t even really give much thought to the war. I can hardly remember seeing any teenager carrying his or her gas mask in the street or to the club, I think it would be quite ridiculous if anyone would do it. We’ve been through a lot in the last two and a half years since the Intifada began, and I know now that if I will hear in the news that there is a threat of a suicide bomber in Jerusalem, I would be much more careful than if someone would say there is a missile coming from Iraq to Israel. I just hope that there is going to be a truce between Israel and Palestine. It might be too naive to say that, but I can see us returning to life as it were before the Intifada began. We used to travel to the West Bank, and visit our Palestinian friends, and our Palestinian friends would come, and we would sit in the old town of Jerusalem to eat hummus and pita bread. It’s so different than how it used to be but hopefully we’re heading back to those days that were really, really good.
