Youth Radio Los Angeles Summer Workshop 2007 Six students from different high schools across Los Angeles participated in a hands-on Youth Radio media production workshop held at Art Share-LA. Students learned basic radio production and multi-media skills. The workshop also addressed the issue of dating and domestic violence. Many of the stories produced reflect cultural factors that contribute to the prevalence of dating and domestic violence, such as sexism in music and pop culture, homophobia, and strict gender roles.

Chris feels there should be more uplifting messages about woman in Hip Hop music culture. He’s concerned that all too often male Hip Hop artists represent women in disrespectful ways. “What about the women who work two jobs just to support their kids? Or the women that we truly love and build relationships with?” he asks.

Anahi Canales
When Anahi Canales first learned she was pregnant, she was worried about the judgment of others. Some women that have been in her shoes have told her she’s ruining her life, but Anahi feels it’s the start of a new one.

Lizbeth Ayala

Lizbeth, a senior at Roosevelt High School, feels like female music artists change their style in clothes, their "look", and even the themes of their songs as they become more popular. Lizbeth says one of her favorite musical artists, Shakira, is a good example. Shakira has dyed her hair, wears sexier clothes, and sings more in English now that she is hitting the top of the charts in the U.S. "It feels like [she] forgot about the audience connection", Lizbeth says.

Ohim Sheeme
Ohim, A junior at Venice High School, has been out and proud about being gay since he was in the 8th grade. But recently, he "was given a wake up call" when he began a relationship with someone who is in the closet. In this piece, Ohim explores the relationship between homophobia and coming out as a gay teenager.

Noel Ramon

Youth Radio's Noel Ramon feels that men and women are completely equal and should not take on duties due to their gender. He's also interested in what makes a man "a real man," and what are the images and ideas that young men learn from their fathers or other male figures in their lives about masculinity.

Ana Castillo
Reports on the re-emergence of the Sanctuary Movement, as churches nationwide are publicly opening their doors to undocumented immigrants as a show of support for immigration reform. Many immigrants choose to enter sanctuary at churches to keep their family together, especially when parents and children have different legal status.
