My Father's Sacrifice
"That’s what my dad goes through every day just so that he can get some money for his family."
By Abdullah Hussain
My father works at a liquor store and he has a hard time. I remember when I was a little kid, I used to want to become like my father. When people asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I would say, “When I grow up, I want to work in a liquor store, just like my dad” and they would just laugh. Not in a mean way, but just a giggle.
When I grew up, I noticed how hard my dad works and what he has to go through. If you see it from my perspective, he is a hard worker and no matter what happens to him, he will just keep on working.
I remember this one time when my dad was working and this lady had come in the store to steal something. Unfortunately for her, my dad caught here, but when he did, this guy came out of nowhere and he just punched my dad right on the eye. It’s a horrible sight, to see such a tragedy like this happen.
My dad was lucky, because another worker was there and when he saw what happened, he turned around and picked up a bat. Unfortunately for him though, the guy saw the worker and punched him too.
The only reason my father was lucky was because if the worker wasn’t there, then my father would have been in a wheelchair. The next day, my dad had a black eye the size of a baseball, but he still went back to work. That’s what my dad goes through every day just so that he can get some money for his family.
