Gays in the Media

"America’s media has taken gay people under its wing."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Meja Shoba

It can be firmly said that it is very cool to be gay. There are reality shows like, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” in which an entourage of gay men help a very unorganized straight male become more presentable. Television programs of this ilk empower a gay community that has been ignored and disregarded. We have washed away the barriers, and frankly it’s about time.

The cable program, “Queer as Folk,” and the sitcom, “Will and Grace” have paved the way for gay representation. I remember when the WB series, “Dawson’s Creek” showed the very first gay kiss between the only two gay people in the entire town.

The script has been flipped for gays in an aggressive way. I would like to give kudos to the media. Though only half a step has been made through the door for gay representation in the media, things have traveled quite a ways from what they were before.
