Tower of Terror?

"A building like this could make our city a greater terrorist magnet."

By Alana Germany

Listen to this Commentary!

Recently plans were unveiled oto build a new skyscaper in San Fransisco. This building would be the tallest on the west coast and would act as a Transbay terminal. But is this new skyscraper really what is best for the Bay Area? Youth Radio reporter Alana Germany talks about this recent project and how it may affect us.

The Golden Gate Bridge may be San Francisco’s most famous landmark, but by 2014, it could be overshadowed by a new skyscraper.

Recently plans were unveiled to build the tallest building on the west coast right here in the Bay Area. This building – the new Transbay terminal -- would serve as an improved transportation hub for various bus lines and a new train service connecting the East Bay and the peninsula.

Some people are excited by the prospect of adding a new glamorous building to the cities’ skyline. But I’m worried about safety. Since 9/11, we’ve been warned about the possibility of another attack. A building like this could make our city a greater terrorist magnet. I’m also wondering why the city is willing to spend nearly a billion dollars on a building while our schools and health care system are desperately in need of cash.

What I like about San Francisco is that it has all the lure of a big city with its culture of acceptance, distinctive neighborhoods, and attractive shops. But unlike other big cities like New York, it maintains a relaxed atmosphere. I’m afraid the addition of a skyscraper of this magnitude will change that.
