Haters

"Kids at my school use the word 'hater' to describe the people who always have something bad to say."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Musa Aziz

Youth Radio’s Musa Aziz doesn’t need a dictionary to know what the word “hater” means. It’s a term kids use all the time. Musa deals with the haters in his life by coming up with some creative retorts of his own.

A hater is an abominable, loathing, malevolent being who creates trouble for its prey. Kids at my school use the word “hater” to describe the people who always have something bad to say.

Why do people always try to bring down someone they don’t even know? Haters can hate on anything—but they’re not all the same. Here's how it breaks down. We got the full on haters, the not so bad haters, and people who have second thoughts about being haters. And of course, there are, praise God, the cool nonhaters.

Haters are especially hard on people who are different—like me. I am proud to say that I'm diverse. French and swimming are my favorite classes, I love Eminem and Blondie, and I sport my own fashions, like wearing socks on my arms. I'm not like those wannabe bad boys and gangsters who walk around trying to act all tough.

A lot of people immediately don’t like me-usually for the same stupid reason; because they think I’m gay. To me, that’s just one of the oddest reasons to dislike someone, but that’s the way homophobes are. I guess they think I’m weird because I'm not doing the things that these "regular" and "normal" guys do, like smoke, act all baddish, play cards, and gamble.

These haters call me names, or launch food at me in the halls. A lot of times I ignore them. But sometimes I stand up for myself. “Go away,” I tell them, or “Get a life!” or “Shut up, you sycophant!” I use vocabulary words from my English class, just to confuse them.

But believe it or not, despite all the crass haters I have to deal with, there are actually some people who are cool with me.

So for everyone out there dealing with haters who attack you for neurotic reasons, our situations might be different, but there’s only one solution: Please--don’t let them get the better of you. No matter how hard they try they can’t break us.
