Oakland Violence

"The Oakland homicide rate is high."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Hyter Edward Runnels III

The Oakland homicide rate is high and it looks like it will be worse than 2002, and no one cares.

The weird thing is, last year everybody was interested in the murders in Oakland. Now, with the war in Iraq and a new California Governor, it seems like no one is paying attention.

To me, the war on the street is bigger than the war in Iraq, because my friends and family are dying out here. I recently talked to a friend who has lived in Oakland for many years. He says after a while you get used to the violence everyday, you’re just happy it’s not you or someone you know who gets killed. The sad thing is, many people think like my friend. Even worse, people are parading around thinking its good that we’re a dangerous town.

I want Oakland to be out of the headlines not because nobody cares, but because the killings have stopped.
