A lot of things have been happening in Oakland other than people killing each other, even though those are the only crimes that make it on the news.
My little brother, who’s only thirteen years old, and his close friend, who is fourteen, got robbed by eight teenagers while on their way back from the movies. My brother and his friend had to actually empty their pockets to give the hoodlums everything they had– they even took his gold teeth. My brother asked one of the many police officers in downtown Oakland for a ride, telling him they had been robbed and had no money for bus fare. The cop said, “That’s not my problem.”
When my mother was my age, growing up in Oakland, she didn’t have to worry about somebody killing or robbing her - she was free to walk in the house after dark. It’s a shame that now she has to worry at night because of fear that something is going to happen to her children.
