County Jails

Listen to this Commentary!

By Damon Survine

I spent eight months in county jail, and believe me, it's not a place you want to be.

I'm Damon Survine with a commentary from Youth Radio.

Some people act as if there is no law and they don't care. But in the end, they always realize they should have been more careful. While you're in jail, rules keep you under control. When fighting breaks out, it can lead to punishment for your actions. I believe that if you can't stop what is going on when you see it start, you should just stay out of it.

I think before I act and speak, which keeps me on track most of the time. Also, while you are in juvenile hall, they treat you with no respect. This can make you very angry. If you can't control yourself, then they control you. This can mean using force against you. Some of the workers, who are called counselors, get in your face. They say bad things about you and make you feel very disappointed. But I pay no attention to them. They are not nice people, so I would advise kids to have hobbies that can keep them out of trouble. I will do it because I don't want to end up out of luck. I don't like jails, so I chose to do something smarter and stay out of them.

For Youth Radio, I'm Damon Survine.
