Gangs

"They’re bored, so they skip school, drink, smoke and do as they please."

By Martisa Arias

It seems like young people think being in a gang is something that makes them cool.

I’ve heard my brother tell other people that he’s in a gang, but he’s not. He just has a group of friends that hang out a lot and start fights over nothing. They say they’re “representing the street,” and like a lot of teens today, they go out tagging and fighting because they think there’s nothing else to do. They’re bored, so they skip school, drink, smoke and do as they please.

My brother has gotten in serious trouble before…and now it seems to be a routine he can’t break. I know people who joined gangs at 11 years old. They are now 16, and have been in and out of jail and have gone thru a lot. I hope my brother will realize one day that this life is not for him. People need to understand that growing up in the hood is complicated. It is so easy to join a gang but extremely hard to get out.
