Oakland Violence Scenes

Poetry and conversations

By Gerald Ward II, Bianca Yarborough, Bridget Taylor, and Ise Lyfe

In Oakland, California, more than 100 people have died this year as a result of homicide. Many of the victims are youth — sometimes as many as three in a single week. Violence is now a topic of conversation among young people.

What you are about to hear is a street corner conversation from East Oakland, documented by Youth Radio. The voices belong to Gerald Ward II, Bianca Yarborough, her mother Bridget Taylor, and the poet Ise Lyfe. 19-year-old Ise Lyfe performs with Youth Speaks, a poetry project in San Francisco. The story was produced by Youth Radio.
