Release Me

By Leon Sykes

Listen to this Commentary!

With all the political and social unrest, it can sometimes seem like the world's going crazy. Through poetry, Youth Radio's Leon Sykes addresses current social situations - from racism to church to domestic violence - and spits his political analysis with a personal and religious twist.

I'm prayin to God to release me from these demons
Devil's got a hold on my soul
Lightweight wishin I was dreamin.
Scared of what the Future may be
Don't wanna have sex with my wife...
Cuz I got some powerful semen
My seed may come out like the next Coming of Damien

Evil will run this world that's all I'm sayin
These mind patterns are too much for my brain
It's dark and Hell is hot
God please don't allow me to be drained
My people aren't ready for what's ahead of us
We're losing our mind, doing stupid stuff...
I've predicted we'll go insane

We say "Nigga" in church and still pray to the all mighty above
We claim to be saints, law-abiding citizens
Yet alot of these cats beat the mess outta the ones they love
Cliche terms thrown out freely....What you talkin bout Willis?
I'm talkin bout mind boggling approaches to free myself from this dark side
I can't even walk into a Holy Temple, my skin starts to burn

Devil says if I mention anything remotely positive then I get that free ride
That free ride to the place where gasoline jeans evaporate quick
The place where we all don't wanna go... Not above, down below... You know, that shady ish
Yea, you already know.
So even though I'm hopin the almighty will come save me
Imma have to keep my pact wit the devil
Or we'll never know what it's like to be free from mental slavery.
