He Sold Me a Dream

"...I grew tired of wastin my valuable mind/ I put an end to throwin my back out to pursue his grind/ Sellin my soul was bein far too kind..."

By Ayesha Walker

Youth Radio's Ayesha Walker compares working for a corporate grocery store to prostitution.

So he sold me a dream
Told me to hop on his team
N stick wit His theme
Dis man had a shiny scheme
Had me workin to the extreme

I wondered if his idea was as fine as it seemed

Hear me out cuz I gotta feelin don’t understand
I had to do somethin quick so I chose to work for The Man
My services were now on demand
Following his every effin command
I wasn’t trippin cuz I saw that cash flowin n ma hand
Everything workin out just as He planned
Told my patnas to catch me when they can
Cuz I’m too busy workin fa The Man

You shuda seen the list of what’s required of mine
He damn near hogged all my effin time
Couldn’t even go to church to study the will of thine
He was subliminally taking ova my mind
I was tryina keep up with him but I was too far behind
I began to consider making this – for the rest of my life – my everyday grind

But that was it! His dream dun crossed my line

I grew tired of wastin my valuable mind
I put an end to throwin my back out to pursue his grind
Sellin my soul was bein far too kind
I needed a hustle that’s nothing less than wholly mines
I was tired of him sittin on his ass but workin my behind
So he kan unwind and squander his precious time

All work no play
All work low pay
I’ll tell you who I worked for damn near every single day
He went by the name of… Mr. Safeway

He was the pimp and I was the hoe
Whatever he said wud always go
Cuz I was the one makin his dough
I was ignorant and didn’t even kno
That I cud be the pimp havin things under my control

But here’s my new plan
They’ll following MY every effin command
They aint gon trip cuz they’ll see that cash flowin n they hand
Everything workin out just the way I planned
They’ll tell they patnas to catch em when they can
Cuz they’ll be too busy reconstructing my plan
To neva eva again work fa any M effin man!!
