Following the Popular Vote

"We complain when our candidate of choice isn't getting the job done as president, yet we continue to vote based on looks."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Keosha Morgan

My high school student council election was filled with cute girls and hot guys. No one addressed the issues and, of course, like in most high school elections, the most popular girl won.

As I follow the 2004 presidential campaign I see that many people decide to vote for a candidate based on appearance rather than political stance. Some voters go for Kerry rather than Bush, ignoring the similarities in their view points and skipping right to their fashion sense. We complain when our candidate of choice isn't getting the job done as president, yet we continue to vote based on looks.

Our bad voting strategies have become more apparent this election year with the media starting jokes like, "Democrats have better hair." It seems like all you need to run now is cute hair and an even cuter running buddy, or to wear a cowboy hat and jeans like Bush. I guess the first woman president will need great legs and a breast lift.
