Shouting For Justice

"People my age are finally showing passion about a political issue, and that's a rare thing."

By Genysys Sanchez

Listen to this Commentary!

Youth Radio student Genysys Sanchez reflects on the recent protests against HR 4437 in San Francisco, and shares how inspired she is to seeing people coming together in support of immigrant rights.

Without illegal immigrants, what would the Unites States be? Immigrants reinforce the American Dream by keeping it alive with hopes of a better future for themselves and their families.

The SF protests was one of the largest ones I have been to. For the first time, I saw in person how many people feel the same as I do. My mother came to the US as an illegal immigrant twenty years ago, and now two decades later, she's a US citizen and owns her own business.

My mother calls it a movement ... and every time I watch the news I can see it getting bigger and stronger. It's not just illegal immigrants waving flags and shouting for justice ... and it's not just Latinos. People my age are finally showing passion about a political issue, and that's a rare thing.

i saw someone on TV the other day describe how this movement began: "El gigante nunca estaba dormido, si no que estaba trabajando -- the giant was never sleeping he was just at work."
