Youth Radio's Monica Magaña reports on the May 1 protests for immigration reform. Monica explains why she showed up to the demonstrations - and why she thinks the recent raids on Latino households are unfair, and a waste of time.
Last week, marches were organized all over the country for one purpose: reform.
In the months leading up to the marches, the government has been busting into people’s homes, and demanding identification. In my neighborhood, these men have shown up at Latino households and rounded up people without evidence of legal immigration status.
Being a Latino US citizen myself, I felt it was important to be at the marches. We’re Americans, and sticking together shows that we support immigrants being here. Immigrants at the march said: “Aqui estamos y no nos vamos y si nos echan nos regresamos.” Even if they get deported, they’ll pay thousands of US dollars to a coyote to come back.
That leads me to believe that raids are not a solution. It’s time for the government to back off the people who contribute to our economy because they deserve to be here. Immigrants should have an opportunity to make their life in this country without being harassed.
