Californians Headed Back to the Polls

"While I think some of the initiatives represent a step in the right direction for California, I agree that a special election is a complete waste of our resources."

This November, we Californians are headed back to the polls. We host a lot of elections, don't we? Arnold Schwarzenegger has decided to test his influence over the people by flexing his political muscle by calling for this election. Voters will decide on four initiatives backed by the Governator. A lot of Californians are upset, however, because Schwarzenegger is funding this unusual election with tax dollars. While I think some of the initiatives represent a step in the right direction for California, I agree that a special election is a complete waste of our resources.

Before I was allowed to vote, there were some unfavorable laws passed that affected me as a young person. So today, I have to take voting very seriously, devoting time to understand the initiatives and propositions put before me, and how I feel about them. When I read the propositions on the Special Election Ballot, all authored by Schwarzenegger, I see the election for what it really is: a Hail Mary Pass before 4th down. In my opinion, these initiatives can wait. However if I was in Ahhnolds position, I would try to take care of a few long shots before I turn the game over to another quarterback.

Unfortunately for California, this election isn't a game. The planning and execution of this special election is costing the state more money every day, while the city of Richmond can only afford to keep one library open in the whole city for 24 hours a week. That's good, for a part time job at the Java Hut, but unacceptable for a center of public learning. The Governer's campaign for the November special election calls for a definite flag on the play.
