Social Security needs help. In 2003, Social Security paid out $479 billion to 47 million Americans –and it cannot sustain increased payouts for too much longer. There's no denying that fact and it seems to be the only point on which all parties agree. The debate about how to fix it is causing all the controversy.
Now, to be perfectly honest, most of my peers aren’t following the unfolding situation at all. But as someone with political aspirations of my own, I follow the situation closely because I know my generation will inherit the system regardless of changes made or not made.
But while the system needs some work, there's nothing a little hard work and nonpartisan cooperation can't solve. Whether it's taxing the rich, taxing everyone, cutting benefits, or raising the retirement age, something must be done. Small adjustments in the system can and will fix the problems if implemented.
So to all you politicians out there who won’t listen to each other – listen to people like me, your kids and grandkids: Do it for us.
