Last year I voted for the first time, but with mixed emotions. In an ideal election, each voter casts his vote for the person he truly believes is the best person to hold the office in question. However, in my brief personal experience I have found that far too often voters are picking between the lesser of two evils. I voted exclusively democratic - despite my concerns about the party’s centrist viewpoints.
As a person who truly considers himself an independent voter, I’m troubled by the current state of American politics. How can a country comprised of so many people, of varying cultures, religions, and beliefs essentially reduce itself to a two party system in which candidates sound more like running mates than opponents?
It is time for the American political scene to take third party candidates seriously. Sure, some third party candidates have had limited success over the years. But never before has an independent, or a libertarian truly been considered a formidable foe in a national campaign. If our country is ever to truly be the land for and by the people, then the people must be given all their choices.
