The Hip Congresswoman

"During her recent campaign, McKinney regaled supporters by dancing to the Cha-cha slide, and crowds at her chanted, 'Meet me at the polls, it's goin' down...' an allusion to a popular song from Georgia rapper Yung Joc."

Youth Radio's Wesley Myrick, a Georgia State University student, describes the difference between the views of his generation and the views of his parents' generation on Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney's unique political style.

Most Georgians and, likely, most Americans, are familiar with Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. And whether or not you support her, nearly everyone can agree that she is definitely not your average politician.

During her recent campaign, McKinney regaled supporters by dancing to the Cha-cha slide, and crowds at her chanted, "Meet me at the polls, its goin' down"...an allusion to a popular song from Georgia rapper Yung Joc. However, despite her fresh approach to politics, McKinney lost her congressional seat - just as she had in 2002 - to a less abrasive and more gentile democratic candidate.

Reactions to McKinney's political style seems to vary depending on what age group you occupy. My friends and I like her approach because we never have to guess about where she stands on an issue.

But, my parents hate the way she carries herself in the public arena. They feel a woman of her educational background and social status should act accordingly, and not, as my mother puts it, "Constantly epitomize the stereotype of a loud, mad, Black woman."

I don't know what the November general election will reveal, but something tells me that Georgians have not seen the last of Cynthia McKinney. She’s proven to be skilled at the art of reinventing herself.
