Why I Can’t Be President

"I was born in Jalisco, Mexico, where I lived until I was 9 years old."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Cesar Zepeda

When I was in 5th grade, I asked my teacher what I had to do to become president. She said that I had to be over 35 years old, and I had to live in the U.S. for at least 14 years prior to running.

That seemed reasonable. Lastly, I had to be born on United States terrain. That’s the problem. I was not born on the right side of the border. I was born in Jalisco, Mexico, where I lived until I was 9 years old. I don’t have a piece of paper that says, “born in the U.S.A.”

As a teenager aspiring to be the next president, I’m starting to think that several requirements to run for president are silly. Who’s to say that we can’t have a strong president under the age of 35? But the rule stating that I can’t be president because I was not born here, is not just silly, it’s prejudiced.

I believe one day, I will be the first Latino President…but more importantly the first Mexican-born U.S. president.
