I just turned 18, so I now have the right to vote. I do so if only to pay tribute to the efforts of so many women and minorities who fought for the right to vote in the first place.
Some people say my vote won’t really count for anything…but in a nation where the last election was decided by only a few hundred votes, I know my vote counts. But it’s not just my vote. I am a part of a collective whole—of youth, women, Washingtonians, minorities, and Americans that contribute to our nation’s democracy.
Once, when I was younger, my father took me to vote with him. I saw a blind man there who seemed to have been waiting a long time for help casting his vote. Ever since then, I figured that if that man could overcome so much, there shouldn’t be anything stopping me from making my voice heard.
If you don’t do your job at work, you eventually get fired; by not voting, you’re firing yourself from the electoral process.
