Opposite Friends

"Opposites do attract and this goes for all relationships not just the intimate kind."

By Tamara Patrick

Listen to this Commentary!

Tamara Patrick is a firm believer in the saying, "opposites attract." She believes that you learn the most about yourself from people that are the complete opposite of you.

Opposites do attract and this goes for all relationships not just the intimate kind. My friend likes going out a lot, but I don’t. I make friends easily, but she doesn’t. It’s safe to say my friend and I have a lot of differences but it’s our differences that make us friends. Having a friend who is the opposite of me has given me the opportunity to see and experience new things. I’ve dramatically helped my friend become a better reader since we’ve met. We have been friends for six years.

Many people only see our undeniable differences. Some of my so-called friends say things like “why are you friends with her she acts stupid” and that I should be more selective in who I call a friend. They say this because she does not do as well as me in school and often times makes poor grades. It took me a while to understand that everyone has to make their own choices. You become someone other than yourself when you submit to doing things to please other people. Living by your own rules can be very hard to do but living to please others doesn’t make sense if you are not happy yourself.
