Guys and Girls

"Are boys talking to me because of my looks or my personality? I really wonder..."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Shantanae Stewart

Appearance versus personality: Is it better to hook up with someone for intellectual and emotional reasons, or for their physical attributes? Youth Radio's Shantanae Stewart worries that sometimes, boys aren't really looking beyond her good looks and getting to know her on the inside. She says young men need to forget the pretty...or homely face...and just worry about a female's personality. (November 18 on WABE)

I think it’s true the only reason boys go out with certain girls is because of their bodies or their faces. It’s unfortunate. Boys should be more open-minded and consider not only the way girls look but how they act. Girls can have good looking faces but ugly attitudes.

Are boys talking to me because of my looks or my personality? I really wonder. Boys should take time and get to know me – even if they aren't physically attracted to me. I think they may be surprised when they develop feelings for me based on things that have nothing to do with my looks.

I have a cousin who met this boy on a phone chat line. They kept talking for about four months before they met in person. After all the anticipation and excitement, he didn't want to talk to her anymore because he didn’t think she was hot enough. Now that was dirty. He had actually gotten to know her – and liked her. But he was afraid his friends would tease him for going out with her because of the way she looked.

If you enjoy hanging out and talking to a girl who is not good looking, you should try to stay with that person and see how that relationship turns out.

Nowadays, I often don’t trust boys when they are trying to hook up with me. I hope they want me because of my personality and not my good looks.
