Parents Setting Limits

"You might think that all this freedom has created a child who's out all night crashing the family car, or goes to raves every weekend tripping out on ecstasy."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Max Abrams

The more limits and rules that parents set, the more the kids will rebel.

Ever since I was a kid, my parents have always tried to show me they trust me …by not setting too many limits. They've never set a time that I have to be home, or told me not to swear in the house, or not to do drugs. Of course, when I was little, it's not like I was allowed to watch all the TV I wanted, or eat a whole pint of ice cream in one sitting. There were some boundaries - but they were only there to give me a little bit of structure.

You might think that all this freedom has created a child who's out all night crashing the family car, or goes to raves every weekend tripping out on ecstasy. However, I'm actually one of the tamest teenagers I know. I don't do drugs, I don't drive without a license, I'm not promiscuous, and I mostly get As and Bs on my report cards.

If parents would just give us a little freedom and show us they trust us, then there would be less rebellion and more communication between parents and kids.
