Long-Distance Dilemma

"I know college is important and I’ve always looked forward to going, but my girlfriend is important to me too."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Max Abrams

For the past four years, I’ve been counting the days until I can finally escape high school. But now that I have a girlfriend, I want to stay, to be with her.

I’ve been with my girlfriend for four months and I can’t imagine leaving her for anything. But she’s 16, and when I go to college next year, she’ll stay here.

I talk to my girlfriend on the phone everyday. We walk to first period together each morning, hook up for lunch, and if I’m lucky, we get to hang out after school, too. It would be a shock not to see or talk to her regularly. On the other hand, I won’t be happy if I’m tied to the phone, or always waiting for the next flight back to Oakland.

Even if we break it off and I try to make a fresh start, I’ll still miss seeing and talking to her. I know college is important and I’ve always looked forward to going, but my girlfriend is important to me too.

We’re antsy about the decision, and so far we’re stumped about what to do. But at least we’ll make the decision about our relationship together.
