Sight for Sore Eyes

"My parents used to tell me not to sit too close to the television set, not to read in the dark, and to take other protective measures for my eyes."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Lisa Aultman

Eyes and Ears and Mouth and Nose.... Eyes and Ears and Mouth and Nose....

Most of us remember that song from preschool and we all use our senses every day. It’s important to take care of them so that they continue to take care of us into our old age.

My parents used to tell me not to sit too close to the television set, not to read in the dark, and to take other protective measures for my eyes. It’s advice I promptly forgot as soon as I sat down to watch Buffy. Too bad I didn’t listen!

If you’re lazy and you know it, roll your eyes...because we spend so much time looking at TV’s, movie screens, and computer monitors, our eyes don’t respond as quickly as those of our pre-technological boom ancestors. The solution? Take a break from The Simpsons every once in a while and roll your eyes around, back and fourth, up and down, and diagonal.

So watch Desperate Housewives, but sit in a place where your eyes and ears stay clear of danger, so that you can enjoy these things for the rest of your life. And of course, you should also take care of your head, shoulders, knees, and toes.
