You're the Best, But...

"Then he said it: 'Jen you’re the best girlfriend, which is why it makes what I’m about to say really hard.'"

By Jennifer Marshall

Listen to this Commentary!

Youth Radio's Jennifer Marshall has heard the same break-up excuse from two of her boyfriends, who both ended the relationship by saying, "You're the best, but..." Jennifer reflects on what it means to be a good girlfriend, and why guys keep saying she's "the best." (November 19 on KCBS)

Has anyone you cared about ever said those words to you? The first person who said it to me was my very first boyfriend. I tried so hard to be a good girlfriend. But that didn’t stop him from one, cheating on me, and two, breaking up with me after it had happened.

Just the other day I heard those words again – this time from my current boyfriend. We hadn’t spoken in a week when he called and asked me to come over for a talk.

Then he said it: "Jen you’re the best girlfriend, which is why it makes what I’m about to say really hard."

Although we might get back together after he figures out some of his issues, I still can’t help but believe now that nice guys really do finish last. Should I start being a "bad girl" instead of trying to be a good person?

I suppose for a while at least I’ll keep hearing, "You’re the best, but..."

Because honestly, I don’t know how to be any other way.
