Cool Grandma

"when I’m about to throw another expensive calculator against the wall, I tell myself to calm down and channel my grandma’s enthusiasm for learning. "

By Ankitha Bharadwaj

Listen to this Commentary!

Youth Radio reporter Ankitha Bharadwaj has a grandmother out of this world. Though she married straight out of high school, it didn’t stop her from becoming an academically gifted woman. Ankitha says, "My grandma even taught herself a ton of languages including Urdu, some French, and is now working on Greek"

With college pressure mounting, I can’t help but feel absolutely frustrated with school. Like the other day when I was working on a statistics problem; after spending an hour and a half on that one problem, I got so frustrated that I threw my 100 dollar calculator across my room. But then, I thought of my grandma.

She got married right out of high school – a typical age for marriage in India. But being out of school didn’t stop her from learning and growing as a student. Even to this day she hasn’t stopped cracking open those textbooks and doing a few calculus exercises.

My grandma even taught herself a ton of languages including Urdu, some French, and is now working on Greek.

Her awesome work ethic and desire to learn really helped me in my own education. I learned from her how to be diligent with my time and focus on the task at hand.

So now, when I’m about to throw another expensive calculator against the wall, I tell myself to calm down and channel my grandma’s enthusiasm for learning. After all, if doing these statistics problems will some day make me half the scholar my grandma is, I’m up for it.
