Facebook Applications

"While I love many of the new apps, I do miss the old days when a friend’s profile was simple and streamlined. "

Facebook’s new applications allow youth to be more creative with how they communicate with one another. But for Youth Radio’s Ankitha Bharadwaj, virtual hugs and kisses take away from the simplicity of the social network.

Back in the day, my friends and I would pass actual notes to each other, on slips of paper, out there in the real world. But times have changed.

Thanks to social networking sites like Facebook, it’s all about sending weird digital messages to our friends using Facebook apps.

You must be living under an eight-track player if you haven’t heard of the Facebook phenomenon. Within a few hours of setting up your Facebook profile, I can pretty much guarantee you’ll find some surprises in your inbox.

For a friend’s birthday, one application allows you to send a virtual cupcake. You can exchange affection in the form of virtual hugs, pokes and kisses. And a more sinister app enables you to become a cyber vampire and infect others.

Now I’m compelled to write messages like “Laurel Rox my Sox” using Facebook’s graffiti application. While I love many of the new apps, I do miss the old days when a friend’s profile was simple and streamlined. Now everyone’s profile is so cluttered with apps, I fear an impending seizure.
