Parents and Kids

"Parents have to train their kids to be upfront with them from early childhood."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Kalid Mohammed

I’m Kiah Vernon, a junior at Grady High School with a commentary from Youth Radio.

Kids should feel comfortable to talk to their parents about anything.

Parents always ask kids: Why do you bring home bad grades? Why do you get into fights? Why do you not want to communicate? If you don’t want your child in trouble, then you have to let us kids feel OK about asking about things like sex, or anything else that’s on our minds. And parents should play cool parents once in a while, not just mean parents.

If we are being open with our parents, it will help us in other areas too, like asking teachers about things that are confusing us.

Parents have to train their kids to be upfront with them from early childhood. That way, by the time kids become teenagers and have to deal with the really tough issues, they’ll know exactly who to count on.
