Double Standard

"What’s so bad about the double standard?"

Listen to this Commentary!

By Maria Khordorkovsky

Ah, the double standard! The guy with many women is a ladies man and given hearty pats on the back and swooning looks, and the woman who sleeps around is a slut. Lately, this double standard has been bombarded by fierce opposition from both men and women, claiming if women are to be equal to men, then they must be so in every respect. They say that the double standard is old fashioned and sexist.

To this blossoming belief, I say, “What’s so bad about the double standard?” All it states is that it is wrong for a female to sleep around.

So in opposing this claim, women and girls are giving themselves full leeway to sleep around, and in supporting it, men are approving of their girlfriends being unfaithful. As a teenager, I’m faced with this issue in my own life, and that of my friends. And I find it abhorrent to give the mask of equality to promiscuity.

Girls in my high school, unlike myself, are feeling more and more comfortable having sex with many boys. Is this liberation? Is this the equality proponents of leveling the playing field strive for? To me, it seems more like an excuse to behave badly because someone else is doing it too.

If it is only the shame of being labeled a slut that keeps us either chaste or loyal, then I say, thank god for the double standard.

— Maria Khordorkovsky is a reporter at VOX newspaper in Atlanta, Georgia.
