Being a Teen Father

"I learned the most important thing is to show love and support."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Emmitt Starr

Teen pregnancy is something people see all the time. Some teens are sad because they are pregnant, or they got someone pregnant. I know what’s running up and down your mind from experience. My mom and dad were about to kill me when I told them I had a baby on the way, but it worked out in the end.

I was at home, in my bedroom, and Melissa, my girlfriend, came to my room and she said, “Baby, I’m pregnant.” And she asked me how I felt. I told her I felt good about it. At the same time, I was thinking my life was going away. But in the end, it was all about me being a dad.

Look at me now. I have a four-month year old son. I’m about to finish school in the class of ’04. I have a good life. For all the teens, think about the bad. And then think about the good. And just work from there.

I learned the most important thing is to show love and support, and I hope I can help you.
