Athletic Girls

"Just because I don't like make-up or wear heels doesn't mean that I'm a tomboy."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Taqiyya Thomas

I'm so tired of people asking me if I'm a boy or a girl because I wear cornrows or have an athletic body. But I'm not the only girl who gets harassed for being sporty. The other day I played a game of softball against a group of big girls. I thought their skills were awesome, but other kids saw their game as a reason to pick on them. They screamed out insults at the girls like "tomboy!" And "monster!" Maybe they've forgotten how nice muscular arms look in a tank top, and how great strong legs go with a pair of shorts.

Just because I don't like make-up or wear heels doesn't mean that I'm a tomboy. And I don't appreciate people mistaking my gender just because I don't "throw like a girl."
